Madonna con Bambino
An imposing bronze presence welcomes you near the Alpe Foppa Restaurant.
It is the “Madonna con Bambino” (Madonna and Child), affectionately known to all as “Madonna del Tamaro”, which has majestically watched over the mountain and its visitors since 1985. Created by the talented sculptor Antonio Danzi from Viggiù, this work holds a special story: before making its way to the summit, it was personally blessed by Pope John Paul II during his historic visit to Ticino in 1984. Take a moment to admire this sacred figure, which, thanks to the intuition of Egidio Cattaneo and Monsignor Arnoldo Giovannini, has found its home up here. A moving stop that brings together art, spirituality, and the peace of the panorama.

Biography of the artist
Antonio Danzi of Viggiù was a sculptor renowned for his monumental works and his collaborations with various masters. Born in Viggiù on 23 March 1923, Antonio began his artistic career in the family workshop and went on to study sculpture in Milan at the Brera Academy and the Castello. He also honed his sculpting techniques in Milan and collaborated with the sculptor Franco Asco, creating many funerary works that can be admired in Milan’s Monumental Cemetery. Antonio continued his work as a sculptor alongside his brothers and collaborated for many years with the sculptor Vittorio Tavernari, becoming the first mentor of the sculptor Angelo Maineri of Comerio.
